Ella Doran - Inspiring students
As part of the 3E’s Lectures, Artists are often invited to talk about their experiences when they were emerging Artists. These talks on industry are invaluable to us as students. Personally It helped me see that sometimes in the creative world we can't always do it alone and it's okay to ask for help to where you want to get to, and the importance of having a plan that’s achievable as well as challenging.
Ella made it clear that she wouldn't be where she is today if she hadn't found and said yes to opportunities that were presented to her early on. So take advantage of the career notice board people ! enter a competition or five, you’ll learn from it even if it’s a no and this is important not to forget. It is also important for you to take advantage over the summer months to do internships which you can apply for bursaries to help with costs.
Being confident and believing in what you're doing will show through your work but sometimes people will expect more commitment and trust in you that you can deliver.
Ella made students aware that Trade shows were a good way to be seen by peers and potential buyers and still is. To get your face out there as well as your name is important. You can also build up relationships and interact with future buyers. It may take several seasons to get noticed by which isn't something that should deter you from what it is that you want to make a career out of.
As long as we have the use of free speech and individual tastes there will always be a call for designers to appease the creative consumers of this country. There is immense value in the arts both commercial and deeper forms. Trends and cycles are a huge part of how Ella Doran has been able to become a name that the largest of high end departments stores want to work with. For this research and connecting to people in the field are essential, this is where taking opportunities comes into play. Without taking chances you wouldn't learn how to develop yourself and know the worth of your creativity.
