Today with a friend from PDP we went to visit Graduate Artist Julie Ellis. Julie is a graduate of the course I am currently taking, Painting Drawing and Printmaking BA. Julie has a residency at Ocean studios, Royal William Yard Plymouth. Currently exhibiting a selection of her work on the large open plan gallery they have.
The exhibition Earth and air: The episodic memory of place, is at ocean studios until the 17th of February.
The works that you will see at this exhibition are mainly oil paints on board that resemble to me personally as a seascape manifestation. Whether this is intentional is not a yes or no answer as Julie paints from memory of places she's been to around where she has lived. The oils are layered thinly over the backdrop of the board and slowly built up using more intense coloring as the painting begins to develop.
We sat and talked about how Julie came to be working, what supports she used for her work , what she was thinking of doing next and some client based discussion. Really opened my eyes to what it could be like when I leave the college in 2018. You have to push for things, go find opportunities allow yourself to grow in order to maintain a healthy and successful business. As much as pushing yourself, its also good to surround yourself with people who have similar passions so that you can fuel each other and have discussions that actually matter.
Everyone I met that day at ocean studios were absolutely lovely, talkative and welcoming which is something that the public can find daunting and indeed myself as an Art student find daunting when approaching places like this.
Talking to Julie about things we found useful at point in the course was really insightful. It opened up a new way of thinking for me. The topics we are learning and discussing withing the college now may at times seem a little much and a little rushed but when I leave the college like Julie I will actually have a fountain of knowledge that I can dip into when the time calls for it. everything that we are taught on the PDP course has its value.
This year, January to May /June I will have to be involved in planning and presenting a convention for art students which we have already completed.
Research essay proposal presentation.
A research contextuals essay.
A professional commercial exhibition to sell and present work in a finished manner.
Work placements and internships.
All of these aspects will stand me in good stead for my future practice.
