wood engraving starts off with a cut of wood that has been specially grown over a longer period of time to give a smoother finish in terms of the grain of the wood and therefore easier to cut into and glide the tool around the surface.
You can then use the cushion to turn the wood block around without the danger of cutting yourself or damaging the block.
to print your design you can then either hand burnish the image or put it in a reliefe press like that of an albion.
