I visited the red school house at the beginning of January this year. I had never been to this place before although I had heard great things about it. People spoke about it being a new age alternative learning experience for its students. I'd also heard that there was open rooms for teaching which surprised me. They had a really good system of logging people in who were visiting which was a little odd as i'd never encountered it before but it made a lot of sense. The layout of the entrance was a little off putting for me... but I think that's because I came from a typical primary and secondary school that hadn't been updated in the time I was attending these places and perhaps it never had been. It felt a lot like the main foyer area was open and exposing to the outside eye. The reason for this is because from an early age the red school seemed to want to encourage its pupils that being seen, making contact with the outside world and being open while taking part in learning is not a bad thing, it makes for a more confident student, one who is ready to go out into the world. I felt more than ever as we were going around the school that perhaps if i'd gone to a school like that I could have become a more developed student, one more capable of speaking my mind and being able to voice my creativity in a more effective way. The students that were there seemed genuinely engaged with what they were being taught and paid great attention to the teachers that were on site. It was a pleasure to be able to go in and see this gem of plymouth, no doubt a few of my colleagues will be trying to get work placements here.
